__________________________________________________________________________

Hi,

Today is a grand day, I just gathered my courage to present to you one of my oldest production, which is over 8 and a half years old at the time of writing, Felix Vengelis -Twilight King-. It's an artefact from the past, a cornerstone of my journey, one of those that gave the most to my more recent productions, including HopDrop.

Already, what is the interest of presenting old games?

The interest is multiple.

  • If you only discover me with this game, I would invite you to see a more recent and fun production.
  • My itch.io page acts like a portfolio. As such, I think it is very interesting to see old productions side by side with the most recent ones, for comparison, and to show that I am in perpetual evolution.
  • Logical continuation of the previous point, I want to show that I do not come out of nowhere and that I have the conviction to complete what I undertake and to surpass myself.
  • This will show budding creators (or people who lack self-confidence), in all fields (video games in this case, but also writing or dance, for example), that nothing comes out of nowhere, Everything must have a beginning. For my part, I have come a long way, what it takes is not to let go and keep the faith.
  • I am transparent, I have no reason to hide my old productions, failures or not. The case of Felix Vengelis -Twilight King- is a bit special, its reception was disastrous at the time of its first release (2013), but from a personal point of view, it is a success.
  • In the case of Felix Vengelis -Twilight King-, a remake is in progress, it may be interesting to compare it with the original version.

Felix Vengelis -Twilight King-, what is it?

Felix Vengelis -Twilight King- is a turn-based RPG, which is very freely inspired by The Legend of Zelda -Twilight Princess-, my favorite game, for which I have great admiration and which in my opinion has great potential . However, my skills from the days of making Twilight King made it an average play on its form. The background always suggests a certain potential.

The protagonist and antagonist of this game, respectively Felix Vengelis and Carlemany the Fury, did not appear first in Felix Vengelis -Twilight King-, the character of Felix Vengelis was created in November 2010, that of Carlemany the Fury in September 2011, and they first appeared as antagonists in games that predate Felix Vengelis -Twilight King-. This game is therefore the result of a desire to allow its 2 characters to have their own games, their own series ... Twilight King was planned quite early in fact, around December 2011 I was already thinking about this game. This game will have given a serie and a trilogy, and will therefore be followed by Felix and Filix Vengelis -Black Crystal Mask- and Felix Vengelis -Twilight King- 2.

Felix Vengelis -Twilight King- is a special game in many ways: for a turn-based RPG, it does not incorporate any notion of leveling, the fights were not the most exciting and its dungeons often boil down to quite confusing labyrinths (almost empty of decors, keys pushing rocks, and chest that only appear at certain times, in particular). These are the main reasons for the fiasco of the first Twilight King publication.

But, Twilight King, what does it bring?

It has already opened a series, in which we find a trilogy. Felix Vengelis -Twilight King- marks the break with my old models of games. The games predeceded Twilight King were based on a very linear formula, you only went to different places in the games once (a bit like Super Mario Bros), and the games weren't specially prepared in advance (like j I was able to mention it in this devlog about the legacy of Felix and Filix Vengelis -Black Crystal Mask- to HopDrop). Twilight King was therefore the first game to have a schedule, to follow a common thread.

Felix Vengelis -Twilight King- offers a more open formula. Nothing prevents the player from returning to places where he has already been, the objectives are more clearly stated ... It is more RPG, and closer to the standards of adventure games than its predecessors, so to speak.

Is the version presented on itch.io the original from 2012/2013?

Not quite fair.

  • Some dungeons have been simplified, with paths to follow.
  • A skill to one shot all enemies at once has been added.
  • Some bugs not fixed at the time have been fixed.
  • Two moments of the game, with a bit too bold humor (sexual allusion and insult fight) have been restored from older versions of the game.
  • In the point above I was talking about older versions of the game. Indeed, there are 6 different versions that are archived, each dating from a specific period. The original version itself, therefore the oldest to be archived (v1.0 which dates from June 2012), has never been released.

This version posted on itch.io is referenced as v2.1 build28112020. Despite its few changes, this version is not that different from the others.

The big disclaimer on the main page discourages me, can I still play Twilight King?

Obviously, I would rather recommend that you play HopDrop. The disclosure of my archives is especially there to mark what I said in the part "Already, what is the interest of presenting old games?". Also, if ever some curious people want to rub shoulders with Felix Vengelis -Twilight King-, despite all the warnings on the quality that I have been able to do, I encourage them. Seeing this old game to learn from it (what works or not in a video game, work on yourself to gain more confidence ...) is something that I find very beautiful.
